The benefits of a strong core

Strong to the core.

Your core is at the centre of your body, it encompasses your abs, hips, back, and chest. Your core stabilises your body, allowing you to move in any direction as well as having proper balance. It helps prevents falls and supports your body. So having a strong core is beneficial to everyone because it allows your body to function properly.

The Benefits of having a strong core

  • A healthy back. Low back pain — a debilitating, sometimes excruciating problem affecting four out of five people at some point in their lives — is often prevented by exercises that promote well-balanced, resilient core muscles.

  • Balance and stability. Your core stabilises your body, allowing you to move in any direction, even on the bumpiest terrain, or stand in one spot without losing your balance. Viewed this way, core exercises can lessen your risk of falling.

  • Easier activities. Strong core muscles make it easier to do many activities, such as swing a golf club, get a glass from the top shelf and bend down to tie your shoes. Strong core muscles are also important for athletes, such as runners, as weak core muscles can lead to more fatigue, less endurance and injuries.

  • Improves Posture: Core-strengthening exercises work all of the muscles of the torso from top to bottom and front to back, helping you stand tall with your limbs in alignment. By improving posture you decrease your risk of disc herniation and vertebrae degeneration.

  • Better breathing: That same balance that helps you stand up straight also opens your airway, making inhalations and exhalations easier.

  • Safer Everyday Movement: Daily tasks—such as maintaining balance on an icy pavements, carrying shopping, hoisting children and walking up a steep flight of stairs—are easier and less likely to result in an injury when your core is strong. Not only do you have better control of your muscles, but you can more easily find your balance if you slip. In addition, being able to rely on a strong core will make it less likely that you’ll overtax other muscles.

  • Run faster: Your core muscles keep your torso upright when you run and allows the pelvis, hips and lower back to work together more smoothly. Because your arms and legs are all connected to the core, the stronger your torso, the stronger your limbs and every runner knows the importance of maximum power in those legs.
